219	Annesgrove Gatelodge		<p>Styled as a medieval castle in miniature, Annesgrove Gatelodge was the creation in 1853 of the acclaimed architect, Benjamin Woodward of Dean and Woodward. Designed to impress, the gatelodge was built in a romantic Gothic style as an entrance, at a junction of three roads, to the distinguished Annesgrove House and Gardens. </p> <p>Constructed of stone inside and out, the gatelodge features in the main living room a wide, deep hearth, with a wood burning stove, while the only bedroom is accessed by a narrow stone circular stairway. Beautifully detailed windows are set in metre deep stone walls. Removed as it is nowadays from any main roads, the silence which surrounds this property is part of the charm for each visitor. Beyond the gate, in the privacy of their own small garden, visitors to the lodge can enjoy peace and tranquillity of a secluded patio, a wonderful place to dine ‘ al fresco ’ on balmy summer evenings. </p> <p>The gardens of Annesgrove are laid out on the slopes overlooking the Awbeg River, with a seasonal backdrop of colourful rhododendrons and many other rare trees and shrubs. Nearby is the picturesque village of Castletownroche. The town features ancient ruins of the Bridgetown Abbey and a 13th Century Augustinian foundation. Edmund Spencer, the English poet wrote of the Awbeg River in “ The Fairie Queen ” calling it the Mula. Ballyoran Bog</a></p> <p>"The Giant Irish Deer from Ballyoran Bog were found in clays below the peat and all dated examples of Giant Irish Deer from similar find-spots have returned radiocarbon dates indicate that populations lived in Ireland in the period between 11,750 BP and 10,950 BP (Woodman et al. 1997). The radiocarbon dating of Giant Irish Deer antler from Ballyoran Bog returned a date of cal BC 11139-10962 (UB- 6777). This predates the earliest evidence for human occupation of the Irish landscape (Mesolithic, c.7500-4500 BC)."</p> <p>"The identification of the wood samples from the platform/trackway suggested that alder and willow/ poplar timbers were the main wood types in use (Johnston 2006). These trees generally grow in damp places and can tolerate intermittent waterlogging. It is therefore likely that the wood from this structure was sourced on the bog or near its edge before felling and it was perhaps not specially selected but was used when necessary. A radiocarbon date of cal BC 8280-7965 (UB-6780) was returned from Layer 3. <strong>The date is problematic because it predates all known human activity in the area</strong>. It is possible that old wood, preserved in the bog, was used in the construction of the trackway, and this is why the date returned was so early. A second piece of timber, from Layer 2, was sent for radiocarbon dating in the hope of clarifying the actual date of use at the site. A Late Neolithic radiocarbon date of cal BC 3012-2761 (UB-6970) was returned. This is also an extremely early date for construction of a trackway within peatlands and begs the question of whether the site was naturally formed. However, the chop mark on the Giant Irish Deer antler fragment retrieved from the site is a positive indication of human activity."<br /> </p> <p> "Conclusion<img src="http://www.interestingfacts.org/facts-images/elk.gif" alt="Giant Irish Deer" name="IrishElk" width="357" height="250" hspace="10" align="right" id="IrishElk" /><br /> </p> <p>Eachtra Archaeological Projects were engaged to monitor works within previously untested or unresolved locations along the route of the new N8 Rathcormac/Fermoy Bypass, between June 2004 and February 2005. Three previously unknown archaeological sites were discovered in the course of monitoring internal works. One such site was at Ballyoran Bog, where remains of Giant Irish Deer and a possible brushwood trackway were excavated. The skeletal remains of the Giant Irish Deer are a rare occurrence on archaeological sites, but one of the most interesting aspects of the excavation was the discovery that later inhabitants of the area were aware that deer remains were present in the bog, as tool marks on antler fragments demonstrate. Excavation and post-excavation analysis of the brushwood platform/trackway has revealed that the occupiers of this site exploited the immediate environs of the bog for construction materials. The discovery of the possible trackway is significant, given that the majority of those sites recorded in Ireland are located in the Midlands. It was occupied by the family until the mid 1980s and restored to its original condition in 1993, when its half-door opened to visitors after it had been given a 4 star rating by the Irish Tourist Board, Bord Fáilte, now Fálte Ireland, the Irish Tourism Development Authority. For many years before that, the old farmhouse had exuded a charm that forced passers by to turn their cameras on it. Perhaps its most shining moment came in 1984 when N.B.C television flashed it across the U.S.A, as President Ronald Reagan was about to fly to Ireland to visit his great grandfather‘s village three miles away. <br /> <br /> Croughmore Cottage retains all its period atmosphere and traditional features. There‘s a cosy, spacious parlour, a high ceiling kitchen with a welcoming hearth and wood burning stove, a loft bedroom that delights children (and adults) period furnishings and fittings. It sleeps six (double beds) in three bedrooms. The restoration is a sensitive blend of old and new. 31	Fermoy Abbey	FermoyAbbey	Fermoy Abbey Founded in 1114 by Cistercian Monks, it was called Castrum Dei de Maria, Mary of the Stronghold of God. The abbey was cruciform in shape. The site of the actual building ran east west from, what is now Abbey Lane to Waterloo Lane. It was bounded on the north by the river Blackwater and on the south by what is now McCurtain Street. The grave yard was in the area now bounded by the block on the north east by Hanley's Newsagents and the south west by Charlie's Bar. Fermoy's weir was not these at the time so the level of the Blackwater was much lower that what is is now. There was ford across the river at a point were the lane runs from Grange to the a point across the Blackwater at the island at the end or Barnane. There was a weir west of this ford which catered for a mill race between the island and Barnane. The monks farmed their lands is what is now Grange and also around the monestary, It is believed that their lands consisted of about 1,100 acres.</p>	E

Cork (Ireland)</a></strong></p> <p>"The site at Gortore 1b was located on the southern bank of the River Funshion. The northern edge of the area of excavation came within c. 25 m of the edge of the modern course of the river. The ground sloped from the south to the river while on the northern bank of the river the land was level and was prone to flooding. Area 3 in particular due to its location on the edge of a limestone reef was characterised by swallow-holes. Many of the cut features had collapsed into underlying voids. This geological activity caused problems with the definition of many of the features. In addition intensive animal burrowing activity had taken place in the sandy subsoil.</p> <p> The southern bank of the Funshion Fiver was occupied intermittently in the Mesolithic Period and may have been occupied through out the Neolithic period. The archaeology recorded in Gortore E2119, on the route of the N8 Rathcormac to Fermoy, was located to the east of Areas 1, 2 and 3 in Gortore 1b, on the route of the N8 Fermoy to Mitchelstown. It is quite likely that further archaeology is preserved in situ in the vicinity of the two sites.<br /> </p> <p><strong>Mesolithic<br /> </strong>The earliest known human settlement in Ireland dates from the Mesolithic period (c. 8000 BC - 4000 BC). In Munster, the majority of the evidence (flint scatters) for Mesolithic occupation has come from the Blackwater valley in Co. Cork (Woodman 1989, 116). The site of Gortore 1b on the banks of the Funshion River is an important addition to the small number of Mesolithic sites in Munster.</p> <p><strong> Early Mesolithic Period<br /> </strong>The site on the southern bank of the Funshion River was used by people in the Early Mesolithic Period c. 8000-7000 BC. None of the features can be assigned to this period but at least 29 lithic artefacts including blades, flakes, a polished limestone axe and points were recovered from the top soil in Area 2 and Area 3 (see Plate 14). Recovery of the lithic artefacts was for the most part concentrated in two locations in Area 3, in proximity to the large pits in the north-east corner and in the vicinity of the pits centred on the hearth C.1236 in the western part of the central section of activity (Figure 21).</p> <p><strong> Late Mesolithic Period</strong><br /> The site on the southern bank of the Funshion River was used by people in the Late Mesolithic Period c. 7000-4000 BC (Figure 22). Six Late Mesolithic radiocarbon dates were returned from five pits in Area 2 and Area 3. The artefact assemblage, from the pits that dated to the Late Mesolithic, was mixed."	A
